Flora Springs has the distinction of being home to one of Napa Valley’s original "ghost wineries" – wineries built between 1860 and 1900 but abandoned in the early 20th century due to vine disease, the Great Depression, and Prohibition. Today, some ghost wineries still exist as ruins, but others, such as Flora Springs, have been renovated and restored to their former glory. Each year we bottle small amounts of estate-grown wines in honor of this illustrious history.

The custom artwork on this year's All Hallows' Eve, which we affectionately refer to as "Square Jack," was created by award-winning children's book illustrator John Manders. Third generation family member and General Manager Nat Komes discovered John's art while reading to his kids at the St. Helena library. Inspiration comes from many places!

The wine comes from a small block near John Komes' home on the Rutherford side of the Komes Ranch. Featuring rich flavors of black currant, raspberry and plum mingled with notes of violet, black licorice and tea, the 2014 vintage is deeply flavored and generously structured, with ripe tannins and excellent length. A note of fresh roasted coffee beans from the oak barrel aging adds fullness and complexity.

On the Vine

In spite of a year that saw the continuation of California's drought, vintners in the region celebrated another vintage for the record books in 2014. Heavy rains in late February and early March gave a much-needed drink of water to vines as they emerged from dormancy, and a warm, relatively frost-free spring allowed bud break, flowering and fruit set to proceed without interruption. Continued warm, dry weather throughout the summer brought the grapes to perfect ripeness in a harvest that was relatively early and also bountiful. 2014 was the third great vintage year in a row for Napa Valley, with vintners using phrases such as "excellent quality," "depth of flavor" and "exciting concentration" to describe the forthcoming wines.

The 2014 All Hallows' Eve Cabernet Franc bottle is finished with a randomly selected black or orange wax-dipped capsule.

Flora Springs 2014 All Hallow’s Eve Cabernet Franc Rutherford
St. Helena Star
"It’s almost Halloween and you know what that means. Nancy should definitely run in the halls; it may not be such an excellent day for an exorcism, and perhaps a boy’s best friends should not be his mother (or his dead mother anyway). But Halloween also means...they’re heeere. Flora Springs' spook-inspired wines are ready for our Halloween parties and dinners.

Square Jack, the wineries' affectionate name for the ghoulish, teeth-baring pumpkin which greets all tasters to this 2014 Cabernet Franc, is just one of three special bottlings. General Manager Nat Komes discovered Square Jack’s illustrator, John Manders, while reading his children stories at the St. Helena Library. These Halloween wines always spice up the wine glass with big flavors of concentrated fruit and toasty oak. Whatever you do, don’t fall least not until the bottle is finished."

Halloween Wine from Flora Springs
Cooking Chat
"Halloween wine is a good fit for Flora Springs. The winery was founded on the property of a “Ghost Winery”, a term used for California wineries built between 1860 and 1900 but then abandoned in the early 20th century due to Prohibition.

This Halloween wine is 100% Cabernet Franc, sourced from a Rutherford lot in Napa Valley. This wine has cherry fruit and a bit of that classic green bell pepper one tends to find in Cab Francs. The wine has a very nice finish, and I thought it was perfect with a simple frozen pizza we had to wrap up a busy work week. Halloween night wine perhaps?"
