Tucked behind our old family home on the northwestern edge of the Rutherford appellation is our Hillside Reserve Vineyard. This benchland site sweeps dramatically up the hillside, bordering an ancient creek and wrapping around the natural springs that give our winery its name. The Hillside Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Block J at the vineyard’s highest elevation, was the first Cabernet we chose to bottle on its own. The 2014 vintage is dark purple, dense and concentrated, with abundant flavors of black currants, black cherries, bittersweet chocolate, cardamom spice and a hint of violet. Aged in new and seasoned French oak barrels that embellish the wine with notes of smoky oak, cedar, and hints of tobacco and graphite, this is a deeply-fruited, powerful Rutherford Cabernet from another spectacular vintage. The wine’s polished tannins, long finish, and firm structure promise long term aging potential.

On the Vine

2014 was celebrated by Napa Valley vintners as another vintage for the record books. Heavy winter rains nourished the vines as they emerged from dormancy,
and a warm, relatively frost-free spring allowed bud break, flowering and fruit set to proceed without interruption. Continued warm, dry weather throughout the summer brought the grapes to perfect ripeness in a harvest that was relatively early and also bountiful.

The Wine Advocate
"Another Flora Springs specialty wine is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Hillside Reserve, which comes from the vineyard above their winery. Abundant cedar wood, graphite, smoky oak, blackcurrants and black cherries soar from the glass of this dense purple-colored wine. There’s plenty of structure, but gorgeous fruit as well as considerable aging potential. This is another long-term prospect to cellar for a minimum of 5-6 years and drink over the following 35-40."

Picking a favorite from the Flora Springs bunch in 2014 is no easy task, and this intense, generously filled member of the winery’s impressive collection vies with the Rennie Reserve for top honors. It is equally deep and brimming with authoritative varietal fruit and cola-like richness…it is a special and very serious Cabernet that has all the pieces in place to age famously, and, while it definitely needs a few extra years in which to grow into its best, it is a wine for which any waiting is unquestionably worthwhile.
