2014 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon

$175.00 Add To Cart Update Cart

2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Flora Springs Winery. To celebrate, we’ve created a special bottling of our 2014 Rennie Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, which received 95 points from The Wine Advocate.

The label – a fanciful rendering of our beloved estate in St. Helena – is from an original painting we commissioned when Jerry and Flora Komes first purchased the property. It became the cover of the very first brochure we ever produced about the winery. If you look closely, you can see Jerry and Flora in front of the old Ghost Winery, toasting their new lives with a glass of Napa Valley Cabernet!

A must-have wine for the Flora Springs collector.

2014 Rennie Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Named for the founders of our historic 1885 winery, our Rennie Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon stems from thirty years of farming a three-acre block on the Flora Springs Estate in the far southwest corner of the St. Helena appellation. With the precise use of deficit irrigation, perfectly matched clone to soil selection and proper row orientation, this block is arguably the finest of our 350 acres of Napa Valley vineyard land. We call it Block C, a percentage of which we use to create our Rennie Reserve Cabernet. The 2014 vintage yielded a big, concentrated wine with forward flavors of black cherry, blueberry, and crème de cassis that coat the mouth in luscious blue/black fruit. Hints of earth, cedar smoke and toasty oak emerge in this layered and complex Cabernet, and though muscular and powerful, the wine’s silky-smooth tannins keep it approachable even in its youth. Still, this wine will reward aging for the next 20 years, and should be decanted if opened within the next five.

On the Vine

2014 was celebrated by Napa Valley vintners as another vintage for the record books. Heavy winter rains nourished the vines as they emerged from dormancy, and a warm, relatively frost-free spring allowed bud break, flowering and fruit set to proceed without interruption. Continued warm, dry weather throughout the summer brought the grapes to perfect ripeness in a harvest that was relatively early and also bountiful.

"Aromas of redwood, tile and dark berries follow through to a medium to full body that's round and juicy, especially on the finish. Lovely length, too. Shows balance and finesse. Drink or hold."
James Suckling, May 5, 2017

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, April 2017
Building on its striking Cabernet Sauvignon successes of recent years, Flora Springs convincingly hits the mark once again with an outstanding portfolio of bottlings from 2014, and the latest Rennie Reserve leads the way. Much like its mates, it is a very deep and impressively extracted effort with layer upon layer of incisive blackcurrant fruit, creamy oak, notes of loam and subtle touches of graphite and black tea, and, if buttressed by a full measure of grippy structural tannins, it is as polished as a serious and sturdy young Cabernet can be. It is an eminently collectable wine that should be hidden away for no fewer than six to eight years in the cellar, and it will be going strong and continue to improve well into its second decade of life.

"The other 2014 I tasted was the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Rennie Reserve. This is slightly sweeter, with more forward fruit than the Hillside Reserve, but it is still a big, concentrated, layered wine with plenty of crème de cassis, black cherry, toasty oak, graphite and earth. It is full-bodied, powerful, muscular and slightly more approachable than the Hillside Reserve. Ideally it begs for 4-5 years of bottle age and should drink well and evolve for another three decades."
