2016 Napa Valley Merlot

2016 Napa Valley Merlot

$35.00 Add To Cart Update Cart

Our Napa Valley Merlot is an approachable, people-pleasing wine, one of Flora Komes’ favorites as she loved its beautiful fruit flavors and supple, easy-going texture. The 2016 vintage draws on estate fruit from our sustainably-farmed vineyards in St. Helena, Rutherford and Oakville, properties we have owned and farmed for decades. This 100% Merlot delivers showy black cherry and blueberry flavors with notes of dark chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker (did someone say s’mores?). Hints of lavender and leather add complexity, along with a brown spice character from the French oak barrels. This is an unctuous, mouth-filling wine with ripe tannins and just the right amount of acidity to keep it fresh and focused. Incredibly versatile, our Napa Valley Merlot is an ideal match for roasted chicken with lemon and herbs, slow-cooked lamb stew or spinach risotto with taleggio cheese.

On the Vine

An early bud break followed by warm weather and spring rains brought a rapid start to the 2016 growing season, a near perfect year with beautiful weather from bloom, to berry set, to veraison and harvest in our Napa Valley estate vineyards. Our winemaker and vineyard managers – Paul Steinauer and Pat and Sean Garvey - worked closely together as the season progressed to ensure grapes ripened uniformly, adjusting vine canopies, thinning fruit and keeping a close eye on soil moisture. The harvest began in mid-August and wrapped up by mid-October, just ahead of the valley’s first significant fall rainstorm.

"Few wineries like Flora Springs have stuck with merlot because of waning sales. Thank heavens, it did. A perennial success, this merlot offers up generous floral aromas, ripe black cherry and blueberry flavors and oak-inspired hints of spice and chocolate."

Quality Napa Valley wines at a very nice price
Arkansas Democrat Gazette
"...Flora Springs' Napa Valley Merlot is one of those people-pleasing wines nearly everyone enjoys. It was Flora Komes' favorite with its supple fruit flavors and easygoing texture. The 2016 brings all of Napa Valley's best vineyards into one bottle with the fruits sourced from the prestigious sites of St. Helena, Rutherford and Oakville, properties Flora Springs has owned and farmed for decades. My reason for buying this wine is — not only am I getting Napa Valley's finest — it is priced so I can fit it into my everyday dinner budget..." Read more. January 2019

"Despite what you may think, Sideways didn't kill the California Merlot market as much as it made Pinot Noir stylish. There are still some fine Merlots being made. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has a nice chocolate covered cherry quality to it. Some spice as well. On the palate, this takes about thirty minutes of air to open and then drinks very well. It is more expressive (right now) on the palate with milk chocolate covered cherries and a nice vanilla streak. Not candied as much as liqueur notes. Good balance. Nice finish. This drinks very well on its own and would be a real crowd pleaser. It will also show nicely with grilled or roasted meats or even pizza. Very smooth and easy drinking. It should mature and evolve over the next decade or perhaps a bit longer." Read more.
